Lead routing & enrichment: build in n8n or buy?
Routing logic itself (territory, round robin, segment) is very buildable. Two things are not: the contact data itself, and the front-end experience of booking a meeting straight from a form.
Build it in n8n when…
- Round-robin or territory routing for a small team.
- Enrich new leads on create via an enrichment API (Apollo, Lusha, Clay and others have APIs) and write only the fields you trust.
- Score leads with simple rules or an LLM step, then assign and notify the owner in Slack.
- Speed-to-lead alerts when an inbound lead is untouched after X minutes.
Buy a tool when…
- The data itself. You cannot DIY a contact database.
- Instant form-to-calendar booking; the widget and calendar logic are the hard part.
- Salesforce lead-to-account matching across many segments.
- Capacity- and availability-aware assignment inside Salesforce.
Example n8n workflow: Enrich, score and route inbound leads
- Webhook or CRM trigger when a form lead is created.
- HTTP Request to your enrichment provider; keep company size, industry and country.
- Rules or an AI Agent step to score fit (keep the prompt and thresholds in one place).
- Pick an owner (round robin from a simple table), update the CRM record, and post to the owner in Slack.
- A second scheduled flow checks for leads with no activity after 15 minutes and escalates.

Watch out for
- Decide which fields enrichment is allowed to overwrite before you go live.
- Enrichment credits cost money per lookup, so dedupe before you enrich.
What n8n costs
- n8n Cloud Starter is €20/month and Pro is €50/month, both billed annually (n8n.io/pricing, checked 2026-10-17).
- n8n bills per workflow execution, not per step, so a 20-step enrichment flow counts as one execution.
- The Community Edition is free to self-host from GitHub.
- n8n has HubSpot and Salesforce nodes plus trigger nodes, a Slack node, an HTTP Request node for any API, an AI Agent node, and a Wait node that can pause a workflow for a form submission (useful for human approval).

12 of 14 verdicts start with "Buy". Click a tool for pricing and integrations.
| Tool | Build in n8n or buy? |
|---|---|
| Anymail Finder From $29/mo (400 credits) to $799/mo (100k credits), billed monthly; yearly saves 33%; credits used only when a verified email is found | Buy the data. It has an official n8n community node, so enriching new CRM leads with verified emails is a quick n8n build. |
| Apollo.io Free $0; paid plans $49, $79 and $119 per seat/mo (top tier min. 3 seats); Inbound add-on from $119/team/mo | Buy the data. You can't DIY a contact database; you can DIY the CRM-enrichment workflow around Apollo's API. |
| Chili Piper Routing & Scheduling from $1,250/mo ($15,000/yr, 15 seats incl., $45/seat/mo after); next tier from $3,500/mo (30 seats incl.); ChiliCal standalone $12/user/mo; Experiences from $42k/yr | Buy for instant form-to-calendar booking; the front-end widget is the hard part. Backend routing alone can be done in n8n. |
| Clay Free plan; Launch $167/mo; Growth $446/mo (recommended); usage add-ons from $54/mo; Enterprise: contact | Usually buy. Clay is already the 'build' option for enrichment; recreating waterfall enrichment in n8n means managing many API contracts yourself. |
| Cognism Personalised quote | Buy the data; automate the enrichment schedule yourself if you want control over which fields get overwritten. |
| Default Core $12,000/yr (24k enrichment credits, 200k workflow runs); higher tier $25,000/yr; extra seats $540/user/yr; extra credits $0.10 | Mixed. Enrich-score-route can be built in n8n with Clay or an enrichment API; buy if you also want booking and a UI your marketers can edit. |
| Distribution Engine Starter $20, Advanced $35, Unlimited $55 USD/user/mo, billed annually | Buy if you need availability/capacity-aware assignment inside Salesforce. Basic round robin is doable in Flow or n8n. |
| FullEnrich Free trial; credit-based (e.g. 1,000 credits/mo at $0.055/credit; Pro 15K credits $720/mo); Enterprise: contact sales | Buy. Waterfall enrichment is cheaper to rent than to contract with 15 providers. Trigger it from n8n. |
| LeanData Editions | Buy if you route across many segments in Salesforce. Simple territory or round-robin routing for a small team is a solid n8n use case. |
| Lusha Free $0 (40 credits/mo); Starter $37.45/mo, Pro $52.45/mo (billed yearly, 1 seat); Scale: contact sales | Buy the data. A cheap n8n flow can enrich new CRM contacts via Lusha's API on create. |
| Persana AI Free $0/mo; paid tiers $68/mo, $151/mo, $400/mo, $600/mo; high-volume: contact us | Buy for the data access; the workflow part overlaps with what you'd build in n8n, so compare against Clay plus your own flows. |
| RevenueHero Platform fee $79/mo + $25/user/mo (Inbound Essentials) or $35/user/mo (higher tier), monthly billing | Buy; it's priced low enough that a DIY scheduler isn't worth maintaining. |
| Warmly Plans 'starting at' $10,000, $20,000 and $30,000 (billing period not stated in page text); some modules: contact | Buy if you need de-anonymization; that data isn't DIY-able. Alerting and routing on top of an identification API is n8n-friendly. |
| ZoomInfo Not published | Buy the data if you need it; the enrichment and routing workflows on top are a good fit for n8n. |
